Great Plains of Texas

Good Morning, Midnight

The Great Plains of Texas is the intended landing region for the Aether crew’s return pod. Selected as a practical destination and a possible route to answers from Houston, it becomes the focus of a plan made under isolation—and a marker of the crew’s division between Earth and orbit.

Selection as a Landing Region

Two days after the crew’s drawing to determine who would return, the reentry sequence was scheduled. Tal had to work out the pod’s trajectory, its angle of entry into the atmosphere, and the hoped-for landing coordinates without the assistance of a ground team. Against that uncertainty, the crew chose the Great Plains of Texas: its temperate weather and considerable open space seemed to offer the best conditions for a landing.

A Possible Point of Contact

The destination was not chosen for terrain alone. The crew hoped they might find some kind of answer from Houston, making the region a potential point of contact with a world from which they had been cut off. The plan remained a hope, not a confirmed outcome: the evidence establishes the intended destination, not that the pod reached it or that the crew found anyone there.

The Crew’s Division

The planned descent sharpened the consequences of the return lottery. Three crew members would go down in the pod while two stayed behind, dividing a group that had been together for two years. In that decision, the Great Plains of Texas stands for more than a landing site: it is the destination toward which some of the crew’s futures are directed, while the others remain in orbit.
